Movie Night - Part 76
Title: Movie Night

Author: critic2000
Pairing: Olivia/Natalia
Rating: PG-13 to start, for violence (non-sexual) and language. I am not any kind of a medical expert so if there are some glaring errors, please forgive me.
Disclaimer: I don’t own the Guiding Light characters, they belong to CBS and Proctor and Gamble.
Summary: This is set in the spring of 2009. I’ve taking some liberties with the storyline, mainly Natalia never slept with Frank, hence no engagement etc. So our girls have been just continuing forward raising Emma and getting closer to each other though they are still technically just friends, but that will change… This is a hurt/comfort story so they are headed on a rough ride.
Author’s Note: This is my first fan fiction so please be gentle. This would not have been possible if not for the persistent nudging and awesome editing of my beta/great friend croftlara. Comments are welcome.

Chapter 76

The noise was deafening. Emma held both of her hands to her ears while Olivia stood at the new console on the wall by the door and Natalia flipped furiously through a manual.

“I can’t remember the sequence!” Olivia yelled over the trilling of the alarm.

“Well did you put in the password?” Natalia screamed back.

“I thought I did,” came Olivia’s reply. “Well shit. Stupid thing.” She bashed her hand over the keypad of the alarm console.

The ringing phone could barely be heard over the runaway alarm but Natalia heard it and answered.

“No,” Natalia hollered into the phone, “we’re fine, we just forgot the code sequence to turn it off.”

The alarm company was used to this, new home alarm users generally had this happen once or twice before they got the hang of the new system.

A few relayed messages between the company, Natalia and Olivia later, the noise finally stopped. Natalia thanked the operator and apologized for the fourth time before hanging up.

“Phew,” Olivia said as she walked over to Emma and helped her off with her coat, “are you okay Jellybean? That was loud and scary.”

“That was too loud mommy.” Emma said in a quiet voice.

“I know honey. Sorry.” Olivia patted the child's head before hanging up both hers and Emma's coats.

Following her little breakdown earlier that day, Olivia had calmed down and come to her senses. Thankfully, after they talked Natalia and Olivia had decided an alarm system might be a better option than a weapon in their house. Olivia made some calls and strong armed the company into making an emergency installation of a state of the art surveillance and alarm system. The family now had alarms on their windows and doors, closed circuit video and panic buttons in every room of the house.

By the time the installation was done it was way past dinner time so they ran out to the nearest fast food restaurant for a burger. Only when they had arrived home the quick lesson they had received in disarming said alarm had left them more confused then capable.

"Well that was... exciting..." Natalia commented as she hung up her own coat then moved toward the couch and sat.

Emma sat down beside the Latina and asked, "Is that going to happen now every time we come inside?"

Natalia turned to the child and shook her head, "No honey, we just didn't know how to disarm it properly." She looked over at Olivia who was making her way to the couch to sit on the other side of Emma. "We'll get the hang of it very quickly, I promise."

Emma leaned forward until her head rested on Natalia's breast, "That was... scary."

Natalia's arms came around Emma to hold her, "I know sweetie, we'll do better next time." Natalia kissed Emma's forehead then looked up at Olivia. "Maybe we should write down the steps so we can go over the sequence?"

Olivia nodded, "Probably a good idea. I'll study the manual a bit, there's a lot to learn, it's a pretty extensive system."

Her voice sounding positive, Natalia said, "Well that sounds like a great idea, we'll get this thing sorted right out." She released Emma as she spoke to her, "So how about we have a little dish of ice cream before we get ready for bed?"

"Yes!" Emma exclaimed as she jumped up. "Can I have two scoops?"

"I think that could be arranged." Natalia answered with a smile. "You run in and get out the ice cream, we'll be right there."

As Emma ran off toward the kitchen, Natalia shook her head, "I just love how she can change so quickly. One second she's upset, the next she's excited."

"Ah..." Olivia came to move next to Natalia, she wrapped her arm around the younger woman, "you say that now but those mood swings aren't going to be so cute when she's a teenager."

Natalia's face appeared stunned as realization sunk in.

Olivia took that opportunity to lean over, kiss her partner on her cheek and whisper, "Last one to the kitchen only gets one scoop."

Olivia bolted for the kitchen, a huge grin appeared when she heard Natalia exclaim, "No fair, the ice cream was my idea!"

"Ugh my tummy." Natalia groaned as she walked into the bedroom with her right hand pressed against her stomach. "Why did you let me eat all that ice cream?"

"Your idea, right?" Olivia said as she put down the alarm manual on the nightstand. "Come here honey. Lay down and I'll rub your tummy."

Natalia groaned once more but was immediately pleased at the notion of Olivia rubbing her overfilled stomach. "It's ice cream, I can't be held responsible for the choices I make regarding amount."

Natalia eased onto the bed and lay on her back.

"I'll keep that in mind." Olivia eased onto the bed next to a now pouting Natalia. "Oh sweetie, put that little lip away." Unable to help herself, Olivia leaned down and kissed the protruding flesh then she sat and lifted Natalia's pajama top enough to expose her flat stomach. Unable to help herself again she leaned down and kissed the pained spot before she lay down next to Natalia and began to lightly rub the younger woman's stomach.

"So other than your over indulgence, how do you feel?" Olivia asked, wondering how Natalia would feel after such an emotional day.

"Well." Natalia inhaled deeply before responding further, "I'm very glad we got the alarm system, obviously a better choice than the other option. But I am still concerned about you. I hope having the alarm will help you... help all of us... feel safe."

"I know I can't even begin to apologize for today, I don't know what happened." Olivia shook her head. "But I do already feel better for having the alarm and yes before you ask, I did call Dr. Boudreau and I see her tomorrow afternoon."

Natalia's face registered shock. "You did?"

Olivia thought it was adorable how Natalia's eyebrows shot up and her eyes got wide. She couldn't help but giggle and lean down to lay a soft kiss on Natalia's forehead. "Yes I did. I can't put you through that again if I can help it. You know I want to go talk about my feelings about as much as I want a root canal, but sometimes you gotta just tough it out and do what's best."

Natalia blinked twice. She had been prepared to suggest a session with the psychiatrist but just hadn't had a chance to have the conversation yet. "Wow. I... I'm shocked but very impressed honey."

"I love you," Olivia stated, "and I know I still have a lot to deal with, obviously. I don't want to, I wish it were simpler but I can't do that to you and I sure can't let Emma see me lose it."

"Come here." Natalia lifted her arm so Olivia could tuck herself in place with her head on Natalia's breast. "You don't know what that means for me to hear you say that."

Olivia's hand stilled on Natalia's stomach, "I hope it means you realize I'm in this for the long haul. I'm not fooling around or playing games here, I want you... forever."

Natalia's eyes misted and she tightened her hold on Olivia then tilted to kiss her forehead. Her voice came out in a strained whisper, "You've got me... forever."

The next morning saw the usual hubbub of activity trying to get Emma ready and off for school along with getting themselves off to work. But unlike every other morning Olivia paused as she was about to run out the door. She pressed a series of buttons on the console on the wall, smiled when she heard the confirming beeps, locked the door and headed for the car finally confident things were moving in the right direction.

Natalia had gone ahead in her own car as Olivia had her appointment scheduled for the afternoon about the time Emma would be getting out of school so she needed to be able to pick her up. Olivia made a mental note to talk with Natalia and Emma about having Jane resume her duties with the child. As much as they loved picking their daughter up at school, it was about time to set routines back in place.

Given she was alone on the drive in this morning Olivia decided to take the opportunity to try to right something else. She pulled into the parking lot of the small building and helped herself to the mayor’s spot. If Doris minded, Olivia didn't care and she figured this would only take a minute anyway.

Olivia knew exactly where she was going when she entered the police station. She marched herself right back to the office of the Chief ignoring the greetings and offers to help her as she passed through the 'bullpen'.

She barely paused at the door before she opened it and barged in to Frank's office.

The man was sitting behind his desk with the phone to his ear. When he saw the door open his face hardened when he saw the look on her face. "I have to go dad, something's come up."

Olivia approached the desk as Frank hung up the phone and stood. "What the hell Olivia, you don't knock?"

She looked toward the phone then back to him, "Confidential conversation with your daddy? Really?"

Embarrassment flushed Franks face until annoyance forced it back down. "That's not the point and you know it and if you think you can just walk in here and demand your gun..."

Olivia held up her hand to stall his rant, "I'm here to apologize."

Frank looked on questioningly trying to figure Olivia's angle.

Olivia knew the look and countered, "Ease up Frankie; I really do just want to say I'm sorry for coming down on you yesterday. I lost my mind and I said some things I really wish I hadn't.   I hope you can forgive me."

Surprised, Frank blinked twice and relaxed. He sat down and held out his hand toward the chairs on the other side of his desk, "Have a seat."

"No, I have to get to The Beacon; I just wanted to stop in for a second to apologize in person." Mostly true but she was also afraid of getting into some big sensitive chat with him which was not something she intended.

"I've known you a long time Olivia, and it hasn't always been smooth going."

Olivia wondered where this was headed.

"When have I ever not forgiven you? Because God knows, you've pissed me off a lot over the years." He grinned and shook his head.

Olivia chuckled and relaxed, "You're a good man."

"So I hear..." Frank responded before asking, "Know what I was talking to my father about?"

"Couldn't possibly Frank."

He laughed, "Your party, what can we bring?"

Olivia was pleased to see Frank still intended to come to the party. "Just yourselves."

Olivia turned to leave the office when she heard Frank ask, "Are you okay Olivia?" The Olivia from the day before scared him, he wasn't afraid to admit it and he was concerned, not just for her but also Natalia and Emma.

Olivia paused momentarily but didn't turn around, "Yeah Frankie, I'm getting there." She left the office and building without looking back and thought, It’s good to have friends you can shit on who don't take it personally.

She got to her car and ignored the horn blast she knew would be from Doris Wolfe. Olivia merely smiled and gave a little wave toward the fuming Mayor who was sat in her car waiting for her spot to free up. Olivia turned on the car and put it in reverse, looking behind her she smiled and thought, And it's good to have friends you can piss off for fun.

While she hadn't mentioned it to Olivia, Natalia took a detour herself on the way to work. It had been some time since she'd spoken to Rafe and longer still since she had visited him. She was always grateful to be able to visit her son in prison but this particular visit had the butterflies dancing in her stomach.

She waited in the grey visiting room and paced. She wasn't sure exactly how to broach the subject but Natalia knew it was time and when the door opened and her son entered the room in his orange jumpsuit followed by a guard, she realized Rafe was no longer a child, she didn't need to protect him or hide the truth any longer.

Natalia stood barely inches from Rafe, her arms longed to wrap around her son but the rules prohibited it. "Hi sweetie, how are you?" She whispered as tears filled her eyes.

"Ma, I'm good." Rafe answered with watery eyes of his own. He angled his head toward the small table with its two chairs in the room, "Come on, sit down. You don't need to be standing."

Natalia smiled, "I'm ok honey, I'm doing so much better physically." But she moved to sit at the table regardless; she needed to sit for this conversation.

"How are you really doing?" She asked through a worried gaze as Rafe sat down across from her.

"Actually, I'm doing pretty good. They got me on kitchen duty so that's pretty cushy for a place like this I guess. But I'm fine, I just wanna hear about you."

Natalia sighed, "It's not been easy but we're doing so much better."

"Emma's cool?" Rafe asked with concern.

"Yes, she's a trooper. Reminds me of you." Natalia grinned. "Olivia has had her own challenges too but she's working through them. We all are."

"Well I'm glad. I can't imagine..." Rafe shook his head and looked down at the table. Offhand he added, "I guess it's lucky you have Olivia and Emma."

"Yes..." Natalia drew the word out, the opening was there and now it was time to step through. "That's actually part of the reason I came to see you today honey."

Rafe looked up questioningly.

Natalia rubbed her hands on her pants to try to dry her sweating palms.

"What's going on Ma? Is something wrong?" Rafe asked when Natalia hesitated.

"No honey, nothing, in fact, something I think is quite amazing and wonderful." Natalia began with Rafe looking on.

"You said it, I'm lucky I have Olivia and Emma... Umm..." Natalia stalled before she continued, "Olivia and I... well... we..." Natalia closed her eyes and let out a breath before she opened her eyes again and looked directly at Rafe and said, "Olivia and I have begun a relationship."

"Huh?" Rafe asked, "You guys already had one, what do you mean?"

"We... ah... we're in love..." Natalia stammered out then added, "With each other."

If Natalia had been speaking Chinese, Rafe couldn't have looked more confused. "I don't understand. What's going on?"

"Olivia and I are together, as a couple." Natalia clarified further.

"But you're Catholic Ma." Rafe said matter-of-factly as though that would stop any further discussion of this topic. "And you're not gay." He whispered hoping the guard wouldn't hear.

"I know it's confusing..." Natalia said leaning closer.

"You're not Ma, you're just mixed up. You went through something terrible together and so you got some weird connection going. That's understandable, but I think you need to forget about this and maybe talk to Father Ray to set you straight." Rafe stood as though that was the end of the conversation.

"Sit down Rafe." Natalia insisted. "I know it's a lot to accept."

Rafe dropped back into his chair. "It's not true Ma, you don't know what you're talking about!"

Natalia remained calm, "No Rafe, I know exactly what I'm talking about."

"You're Catholic!" Rafe yelled, "You don't believe in this."

"Now that's not true Rafe. I can be Catholic and be with Olivia. I certainly never said I didn't believe in love."

"What about me?"  Rafe shot back.

"What do you mean? It doesn't mean I stop loving you son."

Rafe shook his head, "I can take care of you, you don't need her." He spat out the words.

"Rafe…" Natalia began, her voice rising slightly, "I am in love with Olivia, we are together." Rafe opened his mouth to speak but Natalia continued, "It's not about needing someone to take care of me. I have feelings for her. And I know it's hard for you understand, but none of this means I love you any less, this isn't about you. Maybe for the first time since you were conceived this isn't about you. This is about me and who makes me happy. I'm not trying to hurt you or confuse you, but I'm telling you what's real and what's the truth. Now I want you to be happy for me... but..." She held up her finger to forestall the response she could see coming from her unhappy son, "but I will understand if you need time and I will answer any questions you have but I won't have you tell me who I can and cannot be with or what my beliefs are."

Stunned, Rafe couldn't remember a time when his mother had spoken to him like that and he didn't like it very much. "I don't know what happened to you but I don't think I know who you are anymore."

Tears filled Natalia's eyes though she tried to fight them, "I got shot Rafe, I almost died, and I guess it opened my eyes and reminded me I have a life and it's about time I got to live it again. I'm your mother, I will always be your mother, I love you more than any thing or any one in this world, but I'm also a woman who doesn't want to be alone forever. I chose to be alone when you were growing up. Then I found your father again and got so lucky to love him and be with him even though we didn't have a lot of time. And while I didn't plan on any of this, I get to be lucky again with Olivia. When you sit down quietly and think about this Rafe you'll realize if I'm telling you this and if I'm insisting on it as much as I am then it means something. I hope you can be happy for me... for us… maybe that will take time, but I think you'll understand."

Rafe shook his head and stood up, "I don't think I can Ma. This isn't who you are."

"This is who I am now Rafe. It's going to be okay, you'll see. You'll realize it too."

Rafe shuffled from one foot to the other, "I don't know. Don't think I don't want you to be happy, cause I do. But Olivia? Why her? Ma, we hated her."

"Well we haven't hated her for a long time, have we?" Natalia questioned.

The guard cleared his throat self-consciously and pointed to the clock on the wall when the two inhabitants of the room turned to him. "Sorry folks, we gotta rap this up."

"Rafe, just promise me you'll try? Don't judge her or me or us just try to understand."

The young man looked at his mother; he had always trusted her hadn't he? Believed in her? "I'll try..." he whispered. “No guarantees but I'll try."

Rafe let the guard escort him from the room. Natalia stood and watched but he didn't look back to her. He just shook his head and walked away. Please Lord, help him understand.
